David encouraged himself in the Lord 1Samual 30:6″

We all have highs and lows in life, moments where we shine and moments when we are humbled. Sometimes we can find ourselves in a low place and there doesn’t seem to be anyone around to pick us up again. Having others to encourage you and lift you up is part of healthy community but sometimes it’s just not enough. We face moments in life when we are forced to take a look in the mirror and pick ourselves up.

Eventually you will need to gather yourself together and stand firm on your foundation in Christ. Learning how to encourage yourself is such a valuable tool. It takes away your expectation of others to cheer you up or meet your needs.  It’s dangerous when we take our expectations off of the Lord and put it on our loved ones. Disappointment will soon follow.

How then do we learn to encourage ourselves in the Lord? I can share with you what I have done in the past when I found myself disappointed and there wasn’t anything anyone could do for me.

  • Look back on your history with God!

Turning your attention to how the Lord has met your needs in the past can give you encouragement that He will not fail you in the future.  Keeping a journal of answered prayer is a great idea.  Pull it out when you have moments you forget how Faithful He is!

  • Worship! Worship! Worship!

There is something so powerful about taking our focus off of our problems and putting it onto the Lord! Pouring yourself into worship, praising Him for who He is and what He has already done in your life! Something always happens when we worship.  We are changed! I encourage you to worship until….  Worship until He speaks, you have a new idea, until you feel His presence, until you feel refreshed!

  • Find Testimonies!

There is power in the testimony! Ask around, turn your ear to what the Lord is doing or ask Him to show you someone with a testimony about your situation. You may have to dig online to find a testimony that hits the spot with your life but its worth it! Seeing God come through for someone else, when your situation is similar will build Hope in your heart!

  • Declare!

Start declaring the opposite! Whatever your situation is, declare the opposite. If your hopeless declare out loud you are full of Hope! Speak to the Spiritual realm and declare the truth! It may not feel truthful at the time and you may have to force the words out but Declare it anyway! Our words are packed with power so Speak Speak Speak!!!

Hindsight is 20/20 right? Chances are you will look back on this time and see it with more clarity. Challenges we face are a wonderful way to develop our character, even though it’s not fun in the process, God is chiseling you into the image that He sees you as!
